June 2018 Overview

What did I do in June?

I wrote 9,698 words with a goal of 10,000. I didn’t make my goal, but I did finish my script! The Book of Immortality is complete at 104,099 words.

This is the first thing I’ve finished since mid-2016. It’s also the first thing that I’ve written since mid-2015 that I’ve actually liked, so I’m pretty proud of myself for not getting discouraged and sticking with this the whole way through!

I also finished scripting the prologue and first chapter of The Land of Two Moons, a story I’ve been plotting out for the past few months.

What do I hope to accomplish in July?

I’m going to be participating in Camp NaNoWriMo again. I’m going to continue working on The Land of Two Moons, and I have a goal of 31 pages. That’s an incredibly easy goal I could hit in a week if I really wanted to, which is why I picked it. I want to take it easy after finishing The Book of Immortality.

However…I’m having a seriously difficult time coming up with an adequate summary. Even trying to put a genre on it is pretty difficult. It’s not that I don’t know what’s going to happen – I totally do – but that it’s hard to do it justice in a paragraph or two without feeling disingenuous or deceptive.

You’ll be able to see my status here. I will also be updating my progress on Twitter, and posting compilation posts on this blog every Saturday (and at the very end of July):

1st Post: Week 1, 1-6 July

2nd Post: Week 2, 7-13 July

3rd Post: Week 3, 14-20 July

4th Post: Week 4, 21-31 July

I’m not going to work on The Book of Immortality at all this month.

To anyone else doing Camp NaNoWriMo this July, good luck!

May 2018 Overview

What did I do in May?

For The Book of Immortality, I wrote a total of 10,030 words this month with a goal of 10,000. I made some good progress, plotwise, in my story as well. My script is now sitting here with a wordcount of 94,401 and 35 chapters.

Because of this, I’ve decided to adjust my goal to 125,000 words, like I mentioned in my previous post. I don’t have much else planned for the rest of the story – it’s winding down at the moment, so it’s more than likely that I’ll be finished before I hit 125k.

I’ve also been plotting out and researching for a new story, which is a spiritual successor of sorts to The Gate at the End of the World. It has many of the same characters , but in different roles. The setting and plot is also incredibly different.

What do I hope to achieve in June?

I’m planning on writing 10,000 words for The Book of Immortality. Since there are 21 weekdays in June, that works out to 477 words per weekday.

I’m also going to continue working on the new story. It needs quite a bit more work before I can start writing it. Maybe I’ll do that for NaNoWriMo this year?

My next post will be on June 30th. Until then!

Camp NaNo April 2018 Week 4

Words Written: 12,005

Total Words: 81,302

Again, I wrote a little less than 500, but I’m still on track.

26 April

Target Wordcount: 13,000

Words Written: 13,088

Total Words: 82,383

Wrote 580 words, hit 82k, and started chapter 31. I’m starting to think my original goal of 100k might not be enough…

27 April

Target Wordcount: 13,500

Words Written: 13,625

Total Words: 82,920

Wrote 537 words. I also reached 415 pages in the Word document, which is kind of…a lot.

Bit of a late writing day today.

30 April

Target Wordcount: 15,000

Words Written: 15,127

Total Words: 84,371

Done and validated!

Overview

Overall, I made pretty good progress on my novel! Although…I think my original goal of 100,000 words is not nearly going to be enough. I’m almost to the 2/3 point, so perhaps it would be more reasonable to move my goal up to 125,000 words.

Of course, that’s something for me to do at the end of next month, not now. Who knows if I’ll suddenly decided to pick up the pace.

So other than that, what did I do in April?

I moved into an apartment and I’m living on my own for the first time in my life. Other than that…not much.

I drew a couple of concept art sketches finished two grayscale pieces, one of which can be viewed on my Tumblr here.

What do I hope to achieve in May?

I’m going to go back to the word goal I had in March – 10,000 words spread out over the weekdays, of which there are 23. That gives me a weekday goal of 435 words per day. That’s lower than my March and April minimums, so it should be very doable.

My next post will be on May 31st. I’ll see you then!

Camp NaNo April 2018 Weeks 2 & 3

Due to me not moving out & not having internet from the 14th to about noon today (the 21st), I’m going to combine these two weeks into one post to keep my posting schedule consistent.

7 April

Target Wordcount: 3,500

Words Written: 3,011

Total Words: 72,283

Today was a pretty good writing day. I got a chapter finished (Chapter 26) and hit 72k words.

8 April

Target Wordcount: 4,000

Words Written: 4,056

Total Words: 73,328

Another good writing day. I’m all caught up now!

9 April

Target Wordcount: 4,500

Words Written: 4,056

Total Words: 73,328

I was busy enough with moving prep today that I didn’t get a chance to write at all.

10 April

Target Wordcount: 5,000

Words Written: 4,527

Total Words: 73,799

I’m behind, but I I’m only one day behind.

11 April

Target Wordcount: 5,500

Words Written: 4,905

Total Words: 74,177

I am still behind, but still writing. Today I finished chapter 27. I also got sick of how long this part of the story was taking, so I’ve decided to skip forward a few days and have the next chapter happen when interesting things are happening. The previous chapters have been full of worldbuilding and character development, but not much else. I think I need to write something different.

12 April

Target Wordcount: 6,000

Words Written: 4,968

Total Words: 74,240

Writing-wise, today was a spectacularly bad day. I think I may need to outline a little bit before I can continue writing.

13 April

Target Wordcount: 6,500

Words Written: 5,040

Total Words: 74,312

I didn’t write much today, but at least I reached 5000 words!

14 April

Target Wordcount: 7,000

Words Written: 5,040

Total Words: 74,312

On account of moving to an apartment (on the third floor!) I didn’t write anything. I was so tired that I went to bed at 8:00 PM.

15 April

Target Wordcount: 7,500

Words Written: 5,555

Total Words: 74,826

I was still tired today, but I still managed to write 515 words.

Wrote 1001 words today.

Words Written: 7,631

Total Words: 76,902

Wrote 1,075 words today. Getting caught up, bit by bit.

18 April

Target Wordcount: 9,000

Words Written: 8,732

Total Words: 78,001

Wrote 1,101 and hit 78,000!

19 April

Target Wordcount: 9,500

Words Written: 9,514

Total Words: 78,783

I’m all caught up and on track again! Whoo!

20 April

Target Wordcount: 10,000

Words Written: 10,028

Total Words: 79,326

This is the first day since the 8th that I’ve hit the target wordcount. Feels good!

Overview

I started out behind and ended up exactly on schedule. I was worried that moving was going to leave me too tired to write anything for the rest of the month, but it turns out I was only tired & sore for about two days. Also, I didn’t have internet for a week. And it turns out that I write a lot when I don’t have internet.

I’m also not as busy as I thought I would be. Turns out that living only three miles from work means it takes about ten minutes to get there, instead of over an hour (!!) like it did when I lived at my parents’ house. Even though I have to do all the shopping & cleaning & chores, I have a lot more free time because I’m not spending two hours driving every day.

There’s really only one more week in April, so I think I’ll post the next blog post on the 30th (Monday). Until then!

Camp NaNo April 2018 Week 1

I forgot to mention this in my previous post, but I’ll be posting weekly updates of how I’m doing, just like in November during NaNoWriMo.

1 April

Target Wordcount: 500

Words Written: 549

Total Words: 69,820

Chapter 26 is off to a good start!

2 April

Target Wordcount: 1,000

Words Written: 1,024

Total Words: 70,295

It took a slightly longer time for me to get my words done today. Things are still going well, writing-wise.

3 April

Target Wordcount: 1,500

Words Written: 1,236

Total Words: 70,507

I was quite busy with things today, and didn’t get a chance to write very much. Oh well.

4 April

Target Wordcount: 2,000

Words Written: 1,636

Total Words: 70,907

Another busy day. I was actually wondering how much time I had left in the day for writing and leisure, checked the clock, and saw that it was 8:30 PM. I still managed to write more than yesterday, which is good.

5 April

Target Wordcount: 2,500

Words Written: 1,636

Total Words: 70,097

Didn’t get a chance to write today. Busy with moving prep.

6 April

Target Wordcount: 3,000

Words Written: 1,636

Total Words: 70,097

Didn’t get a chance to write today. Busy with moving prep.

Overview

I think I severely underestimated how much work there is to do when you’re preparing to move. Even just talking to insurance agents and setting up utilities accounts is enough to leave me exhausted for the rest of the day – exhausted enough that I didn’t write for two whole days.

And I still don’t even have all the furniture I need! I thought that I’d be able to get caught up on the weekend, but I still don’t think I’ll be able write very much because I need to go shopping for furniture. Furniture shopping is the worst sort of shopping I can think of.

Anyway, I hope next week will be better than this one.

March 2018 Overview

I can’t believe it’s the end of March already. That month went by so quickly.

I’m going to do this post a little bit differently, since I’m a bit tired of the “list my goals & comment on them” format I’ve done for the past two months. Instead I’ll just talk about what I did in March and what I want to achieve in April.

What did I do in March?

I finished the short comic I’ve been working on! I posted it on my Tumblr on the 3rd of March, and it can be read here. I currently have no intention of posting it on this website, but that may change in the future (like when I get a program capable of creating pdf files). I’ve also added a link to it on my Works page.

I drew something that wasn’t related to the comic at all! It’s here, on my Tumblr. That brings my art total to 17/52 for the year.

I also wrote 10,018 words of The Book of Immortality, bringing the total word count to 69,271. It’s getting quite close to what I had planned out as the halfway point.

What do I hope to achieve in April?

I’m participating in Camp NaNoWriMo! I have a goal of 15,000 words, and I’ll be continuing work on The Book of Immortality. Unlike in March, I’ll be writing every day – though I think I’ll try to write enough during the week that I won’t have to write on the weekends. If you want to keep track of how I’m doing, the stats page is here.

February 2018 Overview

This month was…a lot less eventful than January. Partially because it was short, but most of it was because of health problems – I had insomnia for almost two weeks straight, and after that stopped, I developed what I thought was a cold but actually ended up being a sinus infection. It lasted less than a week, but I’m still feeling the aftereffects of it now.

That sinus infection was the most exhausting thing I’ve experienced in years. Most days, I couldn’t concentrate on much other than my day job, so I didn’t write much. I’ve even been off of social media (most prominently Twitter) since it started because it was literally too exhausting to deal with.

Speaking of social media, I might actually just stay off Twitter from now on. Maybe I’ll check it every other day or so. But ever since I’ve stopped using it, I’ve realized that I have so much free time for other things. It’s a lot easier to concentrate when I’m not obsessively switching back to that browser tab.

Without further ado, let’s get to my goals.

Complete 52 drawings. I finished 3 comic pages, 1 concept art sketch, and have another comic page half-finished. That brings my total for the year to 13.

Read 52 pieces of fiction. I’ve actually read quite a lot this month, most of which was short fiction & essays! I’m up to 15/52.

Find an apartment and move out. I’ve expanded this to include condos and townhouses, since a lot of them are cheaper (or priced similarly, after fees & taxes) than apartments. That’s…ridiculous. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around?

Continue learning Swedish. I am continuing to expand my vocabulary. I have not started the Swedish journal, and I don’t think I’ll get around to it.

Continue learning Japanese. I’m better at reading than I was a month ago. I also have some verb forms memorized, which is nice.

What do I hope to achieve in March?

I’m going to finish the short comic and put it online. I’ll be working on the final page this weekend, so everything should be wrapped up a little bit after then. I’m looking to have it online by the weekend of the 10th of March.

I’m planning on writing 10,000 words of The Book of Immortality. I’m also trying something new in March – I’m taking the weekends off from writing. That leaves me with a goal of 455 words, 5 days a week. It’s plenty doable.

That’s it for this month! My next monthly update will be on March 31st. I’ll see you then!
