Camp NaNo July 2018: Week 1

01 July

Target Page Count: 3.23

Pages Scripted: 6

Total Pages: 6

It is day 1. I have already changed my goal from 31 pages to 100 pages. For those of you who remember Script Frenzy, 100 pages in 30 days (it was held in April) was the target goal. Since July has 31 days, I have it slightly easier than I would if I was doing this in April.

02 July

Target Page Count: 6.46

Pages Scripted: 4

Total Pages: 10

Properly started chapter two today. I also figured out a way to briefly introduce a character and plot point that’ll be important later on. It’s something I was having trouble with as it would seem to come out of nowhere when they’re supposed to be properly introduced, so it’s great that it worked out this way.

03 July

Target Page Count: 9.69

Pages Scripted: 4

Total Pages: 14

Today was a pretty uneventful writing day, though I did manage to work some more things out. There’s a bit more foreshadowing now than I originally had in my outline.

04 July

Target Page Count: 12.92

Pages Scripted: 3

Total Pages: 17

Another uneventful writing day.

05 July

Target Page Count: 16.15

Pages Scripted: 3

Total Pages: 20

Again, an uneventful day. At least the plot is moving forward.

06 July

Target Page Count: 19.38

Pages Scripted: 4

Total Pages: 24

Made good progress on the current chapter.

Overview

This week started out pretty strong and ended with me forcing myself to write, but somehow managing to keep ahead of schedule. I’m really hoping next week is going to be better.

June 2018 Overview

What did I do in June?

I wrote 9,698 words with a goal of 10,000. I didn’t make my goal, but I did finish my script! The Book of Immortality is complete at 104,099 words.

This is the first thing I’ve finished since mid-2016. It’s also the first thing that I’ve written since mid-2015 that I’ve actually liked, so I’m pretty proud of myself for not getting discouraged and sticking with this the whole way through!

I also finished scripting the prologue and first chapter of The Land of Two Moons, a story I’ve been plotting out for the past few months.

What do I hope to accomplish in July?

I’m going to be participating in Camp NaNoWriMo again. I’m going to continue working on The Land of Two Moons, and I have a goal of 31 pages. That’s an incredibly easy goal I could hit in a week if I really wanted to, which is why I picked it. I want to take it easy after finishing The Book of Immortality.

However…I’m having a seriously difficult time coming up with an adequate summary. Even trying to put a genre on it is pretty difficult. It’s not that I don’t know what’s going to happen – I totally do – but that it’s hard to do it justice in a paragraph or two without feeling disingenuous or deceptive.

You’ll be able to see my status here. I will also be updating my progress on Twitter, and posting compilation posts on this blog every Saturday (and at the very end of July):

1st Post: Week 1, 1-6 July

2nd Post: Week 2, 7-13 July

3rd Post: Week 3, 14-20 July

4th Post: Week 4, 21-31 July

I’m not going to work on The Book of Immortality at all this month.

To anyone else doing Camp NaNoWriMo this July, good luck!

Camp NaNo April 2018 Week 4

Since April ends on the Monday after the Saturday I post my progress reports, I decided to just have this post cover the rest of the month.

Target Wordcount: 13,000

Words Written: 13,088

Total Words: 82,383

Wrote 580 words, hit 82k, and started chapter 31. I’m starting to think my original goal of 100k might not be enough…

27 April

Target Wordcount: 13,500

Total Words: 82,920

Wrote 537 words. I also reached 415 pages in the Word document, which is kind of…a lot.

30 April

Target Wordcount: 15,000

Words Written: 15,127

Total Words: 84,371

Done and validated!

Overview

Overall, I made pretty good progress on my novel! Although…I think my original goal of 100,000 words is not nearly going to be enough. I’m almost to the 2/3 point, so perhaps it would be more reasonable to move my goal up to 125,000 words.

Of course, that’s something for me to do at the end of next month, not now. Who knows if I’ll suddenly decided to pick up the pace.

So other than that, what did I do in April?

I moved into an apartment and I’m living on my own for the first time in my life. Other than that…not much.

I drew a couple of concept art sketches finished two grayscale pieces, one of which can be viewed on my Tumblr here.

What do I hope to achieve in May?

I’m going to go back to the word goal I had in March – 10,000 words spread out over the weekdays, of which there are 23. That gives me a weekday goal of 435 words per day. That’s lower than my March and April minimums, so it should be very doable.

My next post will be on May 31st. I’ll see you then!

Camp NaNo April 2018 Weeks 2 & 3

Due to me not moving out & not having internet from the 14th to about noon today (the 21st), I’m going to combine these two weeks into one post to keep my posting schedule consistent.

7 April

Target Wordcount: 3,500

Words Written: 3,011

Total Words: 72,283

Today was a pretty good writing day. I got a chapter finished (Chapter 26) and hit 72k words.

8 April

Target Wordcount: 4,000

Words Written: 4,056

Total Words: 73,328

Another good writing day. I’m all caught up now!

9 April

Target Wordcount: 4,500

Words Written: 4,056

Total Words: 73,328

I was busy enough with moving prep today that I didn’t get a chance to write at all.

10 April

Target Wordcount: 5,000

Words Written: 4,527

Total Words: 73,799

I’m behind, but I I’m only one day behind.

11 April

Target Wordcount: 5,500

Words Written: 4,905

Total Words: 74,177

I am still behind, but still writing. Today I finished chapter 27. I also got sick of how long this part of the story was taking, so I’ve decided to skip forward a few days and have the next chapter happen when interesting things are happening. The previous chapters have been full of worldbuilding and character development, but not much else. I think I need to write something different.

12 April

Target Wordcount: 6,000

Words Written: 4,968

Total Words: 74,240

Writing-wise, today was a spectacularly bad day. I think I may need to outline a little bit before I can continue writing.

13 April

Target Wordcount: 6,500

Words Written: 5,040

Total Words: 74,312

I didn’t write much today, but at least I reached 5000 words!

14 April

Target Wordcount: 7,000

Words Written: 5,040

Total Words: 74,312

On account of moving to an apartment (on the third floor!) I didn’t write anything. I was so tired that I went to bed at 8:00 PM.

15 April

Target Wordcount: 7,500

Words Written: 5,555

Total Words: 74,826

I was still tired today, but I still managed to write 515 words.

18 April

Target Wordcount: 9,000

Words Written: 8,732

Total Words: 78,001

Wrote 1,101 and hit 78,000!

19 April

Total Words: 78,783

I’m all caught up and on track again! Whoo!

20 April

Target Wordcount: 10,000

Words Written: 10,028

Total Words: 79,326

This is the first day since the 8th that I’ve hit the target wordcount. Feels good!

Overview

I started out behind and ended up exactly on schedule. I was worried that moving was going to leave me too tired to write anything for the rest of the month, but it turns out I was only tired & sore for about two days. Also, I didn’t have internet for a week. And it turns out that I write a lot when I don’t have internet.

I’m also not as busy as I thought I would be. Turns out that living only three miles from work means it takes about ten minutes to get there, instead of over an hour (!!) like it did when I lived at my parents’ house. Even though I have to do all the shopping & cleaning & chores, I have a lot more free time because I’m not spending two hours driving every day.

There’s really only one more week in April, so I think I’ll post the next blog post on the 30th (Monday). Until then!

Camp NaNo April 2018 Week 1

I forgot to mention this in my previous post, but I’ll be posting weekly updates of how I’m doing, just like in November during NaNoWriMo.

1 April

Target Wordcount: 500

Words Written: 549

Total Words: 69,820

Chapter 26 is off to a good start!

2 April

Target Wordcount: 1,000

Words Written: 1,024

Total Words: 70,295

It took a slightly longer time for me to get my words done today. Things are still going well, writing-wise.

3 April

Target Wordcount: 1,500

Words Written: 1,236

Total Words: 70,507

I was quite busy with things today, and didn’t get a chance to write very much. Oh well.

4 April

Target Wordcount: 2,000

Words Written: 1,636

Total Words: 70,907

Another busy day. I was actually wondering how much time I had left in the day for writing and leisure, checked the clock, and saw that it was 8:30 PM. I still managed to write more than yesterday, which is good.

5 April

Target Wordcount: 2,500

Words Written: 1,636

Total Words: 70,097

Didn’t get a chance to write today. Busy with moving prep.

6 April

Target Wordcount: 3,000

Words Written: 1,636

Total Words: 70,097

Didn’t get a chance to write today. Busy with moving prep.

Overview

I think I severely underestimated how much work there is to do when you’re preparing to move. Even just talking to insurance agents and setting up utilities accounts is enough to leave me exhausted for the rest of the day – exhausted enough that I didn’t write for two whole days.

And I still don’t even have all the furniture I need! I thought that I’d be able to get caught up on the weekend, but I still don’t think I’ll be able write very much because I need to go shopping for furniture. Furniture shopping is the worst sort of shopping I can think of.

Anyway, I hope next week will be better than this one.

Camp NaNoWriMo

Happy April, folks!

I decided like a week ago that I was going to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo in April. I seriously didn’t even know it was coming up, but then I got an email or something and thought, “That could be a good idea!”

So I decided to continue working on the script of The Gate at the End of the World, in the hopes that I might finish it. That seemed like a good idea at the time. But now I’m working three days a week and taking a class on the other two, so now I have a lot less time than I thought I would.

So, I’m going to attempt Camp NaNoWriMo, even though it’s the last thing on my priority list. Even if I don’t reach my goal (20,000 words), I ought to get a good amount of the script completed.

Is anyone else doing Camp NaNo? If so, what’s your project?

Camp NaNo July Results

I won! I was behind for most of the month and had to work really hard, but I got caught up and validated on the very last day.

2016_07_campnanowrimo

That’s not something I want to do again. Being behind for the entire month and having to write more than the original daily goal is not good for my hands and wrists. Or my neck.

I’ve got a new goal of 250 words for day until I finish The Gate at the End of the World. At the most, I think it’ll only take 15,000 more words, so I’m setting my goal at 35,000 words.

How did the rest of you do in July?
